Ep. 4: Ryan Turner, Infusion Wellness Center

In episode 4, Impact chats with Ryan Turner, Owner, Infusion Wellness Center.

About Ryan Turner:
Ryan manages Infusion Wellness Center, which has two locations – one in Montgomery Alabama and another in Troy Alabama. Before working at Infusion, Turner was a strength and conditioning coach for Troy University and the Atlanta Falcons.

Highlights from this episode:

  • Turner was first introduced to cryotherapy when working athletes. “The teams I worked with required players to do one thing to recover every day and 95% chose the cryotherapy. The first time I was exposed to it, I looked into the science behind it. It only makes sense if these guys are going out there and running into each other every day on purpose, you know, playing football, and it’s helping them, you know, what can it do for the average person with aches and pains. From there, I called up Dr. Dan Woodling, my business partner, and we were just talking one day and I said, “Man, have you heard of this cryotherapy thing,” and he says, “As a matter of fact, I have. A friend of mine was looking at getting one installed in his chiropractic practice in south Florida,” and he thought it was a great idea as well. We went out and did our homework, and decided that we wanted to start a cryotherapy business, and Infusion was born. It’s been great so far. We’ve been here for two years. Like I said, two locations and we’re getting ready to open up our third one. It’s doing well,” comments Turner.
  • Infusion is in the business of helping people and improving lives. “If you’re really in it to help folks, and that’s kinda what we try and do, and it’s awesome to see. I have one client with arthritis — he had this saying, he says, “I come in limping and I walk out skipping,” so that makes you feel good at the end of the day. Another thing I’ve learned is if you help someone that’s been hurting for a long time, then they’re gonna tell people, and you’ll get to continue to do it. It’s definitely very rewarding to be able to do that every day,” notes Turner.
  • Turner recalls a major milestone for his business. “We started in a very small location, and we went around and visited all these places and kind got an idea of what to expect initially. And we heard, ‘Yeah, we see 10 people a day. We see 12 people a day. We see 16, 17 people a day.’ Well, about 3 months into it, we saw 53 people in one day for cryotherapy, and we literally had to expand and build a waiting room. I called up Dr. Woodling and said, ‘You’re not going to believe this. It’s exploded, man,’ and we had to add another 2,000-square-foot to our facility just to be able to have a waiting room. That was the first thing — just seeing how fast the return on the investment was going, and how people responded to cryotherapy. Man, they loved it! They were getting better, getting results, telling people and our business was booming.”
  • Before purchasing an Impact cryosauna, Turner and his team thoroughly researched all cryo machines. “We went from California to up north in the Ohio region, looking at cryo businesses and different models, and different models of cryosaunas, and everywhere we went that had an Impact, no one had anything bad to say about them. You know, they all, you know, quality pieces of equipment. It’s American-made product so everybody talked very highly of [Impact]. Once we got on board and started to engage with [Impact] and check out the Impact brand, we felt comfortable. We felt Impact builds a quality piece of equipment. We could trust [Impact]. It was a no-brainer at the end of the day. I think, by far, the Impact machine is the best one on the market. If you, you know, are getting into the cryo business and you do your research, you’ll quickly figure that out, so. And the first session of cryotherapy I ever done was in an Impact cryo chamber as well, so I was kinda hooked after that,” explains Turner.

Ep. 6: Nick Kenney of the Kansas City Royals

In episode 6 of the Cool Cast, Impact chats with Nick Kenney about how cryotherapy, powered by Impact, fits into the Kansas City Royal’s training regimen.

About Nick Kenney:
Nick Kenney is the Head Athletic Trainer with the Kansas City Royals Professional Baseball Organization.

Highlights from this episode:

  • Nick explains why his team decided to implement a cryotherapy machine at the Royal’s training facility. “Obviously, we had a belief in the benefits of cold water immersion — we love the power of water but, you have to have options for your athletes,” notes Kenney. “Not all of our athletes would conform into cold water immersion, and we felt like using Impact Cryotherapy was a good segue to get some benefit of cryotherapy for our athletes, to affect them in ways of decreasing the nerve stress, decreasing inflammation,  revitalizing themselves, and muscle recovery, maybe turning on some hormones and putting them into better sleep patterns.”
  • Muscle recovery is key for the Royals. “We’re always promoting recovery if we possibly can. Our lifestyle in major league baseball is very strenuous. There’s a lot of travel involved in it. There’s a lot of that night game going into a day game. We’ve got the short recovery. We’re always trying to come up with different types of events to promote that for them, whether it be through trying to affect their diet, changing up their exercise routines, really paying attention to their volumes, intensities but we just felt like this was a modality that could affect them and once again, a modality that could affect a different guy in a different way. Not everybody’s the same. Certainly they’re all human beings. Certainly they’re all baseball players but, they have different likes and dislikes. Like I said, there’s some guys can conform to getting into water, and there’s certain great benefit to that but there’s other guys that can’t do that. You sell the process of, hey, we’d like for you to get in anywhere from seven to ten minutes in cold water immersion. We can drop this back and we can go anywhere from one to three minutes. We can build you up so you create a tolerance and start to like it. So, that was kind of a selling tool,” comments Kenney.
  • Cold water immersion vs. cryotherapy – 10 minutes vs. 3. “Guys that would do contrast at the end of the day, that turns into be a 20-minute treatment, just that. We could sit there and say, ‘hey, from start to finish, from the time that you start to get undressed to doing your treatment and get dressed, that’s five total minutes. That means that you got 15 more minutes at home to possibly spend some time with your wife or play with your kids‘ and that’s important to us because there’s an emotional aspect that we have to pay attention to with these players as well,” Kenney adds.
  • Players utilize cryotherapy before and after workouts. “We try to get guys to utilize it as soon as they come in. So, we’re talking pre-activity, right off the street. Walk in, put on your sliders, come get us, take you back, initiate a therapy session. Then, we will try to encourage our players, specifically our position players, to hit that again after they are finished with batting practice. So, we’re hitting position players and our relievers at that time. And then, some guys that don’t hit that one after batting practice, now we’re trying to get them at the end of the game. If we’ve got guys that have sleep issues that we’ve identified, then those are definitely a post-game treatment session, to try to get them at a little bit better patterns.
  • The Impact cryosauna is the Royal’s machine of choice – but why? “We did our research. We looked at quite a few companies and there was just a comfort factor with [Impact]. I think the educational element was very solid. Put it in terms that were acceptable, rather than there’s certainly a lot of science behind it, but it’s about how you explain the science, to where you actually get through to people. Give everybody a sense of what the application can be, how it can be put into play, how you can justify your cost for the benefit that you’re getting. And really, you guys have been, I have to say, you guys have been great with customer service, and I’m real big on that. I’m real big on people that understand what we go through, understand the speed at which we need things to happen, and that’s never been an issue with you guys. So, I appreciate that.”

Rex Sharp, Head Athletic Trainer at University of Missouri on the Cryosauna

In episode 5 of the Cool Cast, Impact chats with Rex about how cryotherapy, powered by Impact, fit in Mizzou’s student-athletes training regimens.

About Rex Sharp:
Rex Sharp is the Head Athletic Trainer and Associate Athletic Director of Sports Medicine at the University of Missouri. Rex oversees 18 certified athletic trainers, two graduate athletic trainers and 90 undergraduate athletic training students – all of whom combine to provide an integrated and comprehensive athletic care program for the university’s student-athletes.

Highlights from this episode:

  • The University of Missouri utilizes not one but two Impact Cryotherapy cryosaunas in their training facility. “We’re always looking for the best possible alternatives for recovery and regeneration and when I first saw the Impact units  I was sold on the efficiency and so, I wanted to make sure we could implement them at our facility. We purchased two units and our student-athletes love them. They love the efficiency of the treatment, and they love how invigorating it is when they get out,” comments Sharp.
  • The program runs an estimate of 200 cryosauna sessions per week. “I would like to think that we would probably get a few more in except that there’s just not enough time in the day. There’s so many demands placed upon our student-athletes now, all sports. Between their workout schedule, their travel schedule if they’re competing, their class schedule, tutor sessions – but they are making cryotherapy a  priority. And with that I’m very happy because we really talk a lot about sleep, we talk a lot about recovery, regeneration, and hydration, and they’re doing their part,” adds Sharp.
  • All teams at Mizzou use cryotherapy. “Football, that’s always a big user. We typically have men’s and women’s swimming and diving in here also, potentially another 65 athletes that might well have been in here as well. Our athletes are probably our biggest proponents for the units. They’re the ones who are gonna go out and tell their teammates, and tell everybody else how invigorated they feel when they get done and how much better they feel – how much better a recovery they get.”
  • Rex was introduced to the Impact cryosauna at the SEC Sports Medicine Conference – but it was also recommended to him by his peers. “I talked to Nick over at the Kansas City Royals, you know, they’ve got a unit. I talked to Ron Courson at Georgia, he has a unit or two, and there was no question in my mind what I wanted to do, and we’ve done it. In the last year and a half, it’s been a big part of our student-athlete experience here.
  • Mizzou has plans to add more Impact cryosaunas to their offerings. “When we open the new sports medicine facility for our football program, which should be August of 2019, we’re gonna buy two brand new units, and put those down there. We’ll keep these two up here, we’ll put two down there, and we’ll keep doing that as much as we can to benefit our student-athletes.”

Implement Cryotherapy to the Luxury Life – A Chat with Sea Island Resort & Spa + Ponte Vedra Inn & Club

About Ponte Vedra Inn and Club:

Located on a sprawling beachfront site in northeast Florida, the historic Inn has offered a world of upscale oceanfront accommodations paired with fine service and a wide array of leisure pursuits year-round since its opening in 1928.

Highlights from this episode:

  • Ella Kent, Spa Director at Sea Island, explains why her team decided to implement cryotherapy at the spa and resort. “We have a highly discerning guest and member profile, including elite golfers, and they’re looking for a couple things – they want to play better, have better performance and then they want to recover from whatever’s bothering them faster.  You know, training can address how to play harder and you can recover somewhat faster with massage and some other body therapies, but what else is out there to give people an edge? And when I met with the co-founders of Impact Cryotherapy, it was like, ‘Wow, that’s that one thing that could appeal to both populations‘ And indeed, we’ve found that it has. So the twin purposes of recovery and performance are the things that really drive the need here at Sea Island.” “We have five trainers here and this has really helped enhance everyone’s experience, not just the golf community.  People are coming over everyday use to utilize cryotherapy.”
  • For hotel guests at Sea Island, cryotherapy is a family affair. “If guests are traveling in groups like families if one person gets it and does cryotherapy then everybody in the family has to do it – and they’re all watching. It’s fun. “
  • At Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, the spa is open to the public – therefore so is cryotherapy. “We have definitely gained memberships. We’ve started selling unlimited memberships and a lot of packages that we’ve been selling and repeat clientele, and a lot of our clientele are coming from our member base as well as our resort guests, too.  =Most people end up signing up for packages if not doing unlimited package once they try to use it one time, they pretty much become addicted to it and they love it. And they’re starting to tell all their friends, so the business is growing a lot,” comments Ponte Vedra’s Spa Director, Melissa Deese.
  • Cryotherapy has helped bridge the gap between the spa offerings and fitness offerings at Ponte Vedra Inn and Club. “It’s something new and upcoming, cryotherapy, I know it’s something that our owner had brought to us of, kinda, looking into and it has definitely been well received, the wellness portion of it. So we kinda didn’t have a lot. I mean, we had the wellness and just our spa services so this is that one extra element that we get to add to our many services we have that we were kind of missing. So now people can do the cryotherapy and then enjoy the rest of the spa.”

Eric Anderson Owner of Unlimited Tan talks Cryotherapy Centers

We currently offer cryotherapy inside of our Unlimited Tan location, in Chicago, in addition to indoor tanning and sunless spray tanning services.

Tell me about your goals/vision for your business.

We recently spun off our cryotherapy into its own brand/company, Cryoluxe. In early 2018, we will offer opportunities to franchise stand-alone Cryoluxe cryotherapy centers and Cryoluxe kiosks inside existing businesses. The plan is to grow methodically, like a bubble around Illinois, to best support franchisees, then expand further through key development markets.

Why the decision to add cryotherapy to your existing tanning business?

From a business perspective, I searched for an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a cutting-edge industry. Cryotherapy presented the perfect option because of its rapid rise in popularity. Adding cryotherapy allows us to maintain the set-up of our existing tanning locations and still provide both current guests and new clients with additional options for the expansive benefits provided by cryotherapy.

Did you consider adding different wellness modalities over cryotherapy?

We considered many concepts, but other wellness services are localized. We prefer whole body cryotherapy because it treats multiple areas at one time.

Why did you decide to partner with Impact Cryotherapy?

We looked at many units, but Impact offers the most well-built, American-made units.

How has cryotherapy been received by customers?

We added a lot of different tanning and spray booth technology over the years, but none has had near the same positive response as cryotherapy. While people may be hesitant at first, they all love the way they feel after a session.

How do you promote the cryotherapy?

The main driver of promoting cryotherapy is through digital, direct mail, social media, PR and marketing. Digital involves a website (both consumer and for franchise development), Pay Per Click (PPC) and social advertising campaigns for client acquisition; direct mail targets a specific radius around our stores, using offers to drive client acquisition; social media reinforces messages shared through digital and marketing; PR is for earned media in the market; marketing is for events – from grand openings, client drivers, education to community introductions.

Why do your clients utilize cryotherapy?

Three main reasons: recovery from training, relief from chronic aches and pains and simply to feel better overall.

Business Smarts: Why the Tanning Industry Needs Cryotherapy

In episode 1 of the Cool Cast, Impact Cryotherapy chats with tanning industry expert and cryotherapy advocate, Rachel Ballman, Owner, Bronze Baxx Tanning Studios and Cool City Cryo.

About Rachel:
Rachel owns 5 luxury tanning studios in Canada that utilize UWE equipment, Ergoline, spray tanning and body contouring. She’s also implemented IVs and infrared light therapy at a few of her locations, as well as cryotherapy.

Rachel is a cryotherapy advocate — she has seen success with the therapy in her studios and is excited about the tanning industry waking up to the idea of implementing cryo machines as an added service and revenue-generator.

Highlights from this episode:

  • Rachel dives into why she believes that the tanning industry is excited about cryotherapy as a business add-on. “If you look at any luxury operator, any big chain, anyone being successful in tanning salon retail spaces, they all offer spray tanning — you’re nonexistent if you don’t. I really see this as kind of the evolution for the tanning and, like, cryo being such a big gift to the tanning industry because it’s also such a sexy service that we’re, “that’s us,” — you know? The tanning industry, we love these new great services that people can’t get off the internet. That they get to come in and get a great feeling and a great look — and something that contributes to their happiness or their overall health and well-being. That is the tanning industry’s mission,” she comments.
  • Tanning salons owners are starting to ask one another other about cryotherapy and have begun seeking industry experts to discuss the concept with but, no one has fully committed to implementing it into their store. Rachel believes this is because “people haven’t found the epicness of Impact, so to speak, and the right equipment. If you call yourself a luxury tanning salon, it’s all about the equipment and I don’t think that the tanning industry has found Impact.” Why Impact? “Impact has proven [that our machine] is a consistent piece of equipment that’s accurate and has a full-blown company and team behind it for installation and training — we’ve invested in making sure that we have our ETL cert, we’re completely compliant and we work with gas suppliers across the country,” comments Chad. “It’s one thing to say, ‘hey, I did a cryo project — it’s doing great’ but to do that same project 5, 10, 15 times, you better have the right partner —and I think we fill that space and that need in the market with our equipment,” he adds.
  • The tanning industry is seasonal and it has a significant slow season. “Spray tanning softened the blow a little bit there for that but then all the sudden I noticed when looking back over my numbers os after adding cryotherapy, revenue-wise, I no longer have a slow season,” notes Rachel. ” My cryo [usage] went up while my tanning beds service went down in August, September when, you know, everyone’s on vacation so they’re already out tan in the sun — but cryo just stayed.”
  • Cryotherapy diversifies the tanning industry’s offerings. ” [With cryo], I see my 35-year-old client getting ready for her wedding as well as her mom that has arthritis because she found out that cryotherapy will help ease her pain — I’ve really expanded my demographic reach,” comments Rachel. “Cryotherapy has totally changed the game.”
  • To Rachel, it’s no question that the tanning industry needs to bring in cryo. “You’re either going to see a studio pop up next door to you because they’re gonna milk your clients that you already have coming to your door or you’re gonna see it in the gym where all your client’s going to,” she notes. She then poses the question, “what if you beat them to it?” “If you, can’t part with the tanning bed – put the cryo machine your lobby.” Cryotherapy is a 3-minute experience, it flows in the tanning business, it’s phenomenal.””Cryo is a huge gift to the tanning industry right now – it is an exciting wellness offering,” adds Rachel.

This episode is sponsored by Geneva Capital. Geneva Capital is a full-service provider of equipment financing.
