Standing in -184 degrees can actually be good for you. Want to try?

SARASOTA- (The Suncoast News Network)- Have you ever been in negative 184 degrees in just your bare skin? That’s called cryotherapy, and it’s actually good for you. The first American–made cryotherapy machine has made its way to the hydration business Hydr8, in downtown Sarasota.
Johnny Mann from Impact Cryotherapy says machine reaches very cold temperatures, “Anywhere between –90 to –120 Celsius,” he says.
So, why would you stand in the freezing cold, almost naked? Hydr8’s Fernando Vega says cryotherapy is quicker than an ice bath and increases post–op healing time by 50 percent. “Knee replacements, hip replacements, or just standard sports injuries,” says Vega.
The downside? Standing in negative 184 degrees, in just a pair of socks, shoes, gloves, and your underwear. Hydr8 has special socks and shoes, you just have to bring a dry set of undergarments.
When you step out of the machine you can feel the warmth going to your extremities. Doctor Christopher Newcomb says that’s the feeling of reducing inflammation and increasing blood flow, especially to post–surgical patients.
“Patients that fight chronic pain or patients that want to have more energy or rejuvenate their bodies,” says Newcomb.
Documentations from the mid-2000s show cryotherapy benefits to athletes. “It helps with muscle soreness and I think it allows the athlete to bring themselves to a higher level,” says Newcomb.
“That’s why we call it the Cryo–XL, cause we want you to excel in your life,” says Vega.
Hydr8 starts taking appointments for their cryo machine on Thursday, December 1st. They’re open from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Saturday. They’re offering a discount on your first cryo session.
